Our Collaborative Structure

Our work is only possible because of the relationships cultivated with individuals and organizations. Partnership is in our name!

The Green Seattle Partnership began in 2005 as an effort to restore Seattle’s forested parklands through community involvement. Working alongside partners, volunteers, restoration professionals, stewards and champions,  we have connected residents directly to the forests, parks, and plants they live alongside, getting tools and knowledge in the hands of people who want to build relationships with their neighborhoods.

We are guided by a strategic action plan that harnesses all we’ve learned about who we are and what we can become together. We’re proud of the huge strides we have made and look forward to the coming decades of land care and connection.

Government Agencies

Government agencies play a key role as public land managers responsive to community priorities and ecosystem needs.

In Seattle, multiple city departments work together to grow and care for our urban forest in partnership with local communities and Tribal Nations. Trees for Seattle is a citywide collective effort to manage this essential public resource in a healthy and equitable way.

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is the lead agency for the Green Seattle Partnership. A staff team plays an organizing role for the program, guiding volunteer engagement, programing, and professional crew work at park locations citywide.

Because parks include extensive riparian forests along Seattle’s urban creeks, we engage closely with Seattle Public Utilities’ Urban Watershed Team. Similarly, we work closely with the SPU’s Trees for Neighborhoods Program on resident engagement. Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment also plays a leadership role, engaging with GSP around reporting, policy, and new initiatives.

Seattle is situated amongst the traditional homelands of several Tribes. As a program of the City of Seattle, Green Seattle Partnership recognizes tribal sovereignty and work collaboratively to uplift treaty rights, partnering with Tribal Governments on cultural and natural resource protection. Seattle’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations leads government-to-government consultation and coordination between federally recognized Tribes and the City of Seattle.

Community Members

Community members bring their local expertise and energy to the Green Seattle Partnership every day of the year.

Whether you are interesting touching soil and meeting the plants in your local park, getting outside with your friends and colleagues, or checking off your service learning requirements, GSP has opportunities for community members to participate almost every day of the year. Join us!

Community members also serve as lead volunteers called Forest Stewards. They make neighborhood connections at a dedicated park, adopting a natural area site and caring for it through the seasons. With nearly 200 active Forest Stewards across the city, Green Seattle Partnership thrives because of our network of dedicated volunteers. Learn more about the Forest Steward program and how to get involved.

Professional Crews

Professional Crews enable comprehensive ecological restoration at Seattle natural areas, tackling neglected sites and breathing new life into these spaces.

Crews work on large projects, often on steep slopes or other sensitive sites not suitable for volunteers. We are proud to work alongside the following crews:
