On October 25th, 2025, gentle showers dripped through trees, the earthy smell of moist soil filled the air, and raincoat-clad volunteers gathered together for a day of collective action. Green Seattle Day 2025 marked a very special milestone: Green Seattle Partnership’s 20th anniversary! Thank you all to the dedicated volunteers committed to expanding and maintaining Seattle’s local forests!

Restoring Forests, Rain or Shine

Green Seattle Day is an annual planting event, this year celebrating 20 years of Green Seattle Partnership’s efforts to restore Seattle’s green spaces. In Seattle, it is too dry to plant trees on Earth day, so instead we plant trees on Green Seattle Day when rains return! Learn more about why here.

All across the city, local organizations and volunteer Forest Stewards host and facilitate restoration work parties for community members. As stewards of their local neighborhood forests, these leaders manage the restoration in these spaces, whether it be removal of invasive species, planting trees and other understory plants, or mulching and watering previously planted plants.

Making a Difference Across the City

At 17 sites across Seattle, volunteers came together to restore the forests and ecosystems they call home, each in their own unique way. Some groups worked on the removal of weeds, like the volunteers at Westcrest Park. Led by Dirt Corps, the group removed 1,500 square feet of blackberry and nightshade. Others focused on planting trees, shrubs, and ground cover plants, such as the groups at Woodland Park and the Pollinator Patch on the Burke-Gilman Trail, headed by Forest Stewards Greg Netols and Jim Corson, respectively. Each of their groups planted 400 plants each.

Tilth Alliance’s Rainier Beach Youth Stewards rounded out their program for the year by leading a planting at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands. 167 plants were added to the surrounding forest, and visitors to the farm were able to enjoy freshly-pressed apple cider, warm soup and teas, and fun activities for all ages.

Futures Rising’s event saw the addition of 161 plants to the Daybreak Star Cultural Center forest followed by spooky storytelling, celebrating not only the forest, but community and storytelling.

At Lincoln Park, Forest Steward Lisa McGinty’s volunteer crew enjoyed music performed by a three-piece youth band, lifting spirits as 295 trees were planted and approximately 2,500 square feet of mulch were applied to the forest.
